Salt River Project has helped shape the West since its founding in 1903 and its history is one of service to the residents of Arizona.

As a community-based not-for-profit water and energy company, SRP provides reliable, affordable water and power to more than 2 million people living in central Arizona. SRP has provided these essential resources for more than a century to meet the needs of customers and help the region grow.

Long committed to the protection and preservation of natural resources and to the education and enrichment of Arizona’s citizens and its visitors, SRP helped launch the Barry and Peggy Goldwater Foundation by awarding its first major funding grant, making it possible to digitize thousands of Goldwater photographs and acting as Presenting Sponsor for the largest exhibit of Barry Goldwater’s photography to-date; Photographs by Barry M. Goldwater: The Arizona Highways Collection – at Western Spirit: Scottsdale’s Museum of the West. This exhibit opened on January 6, 2019, and due to overwhelming response, was expanded to include 16 additional photographs from SRP’s own private collection and has now been extended through April 5th, 2020. This show of support by SRP displays their wholehearted belief in the Foundation’s mission and a common desire to fulfill Barry Goldwater’s wish to preserve these historic images for generations to come.

This effort was spearheaded by Peter M. Hayes, SRP’s Associate General Manager & Chief Public Affairs Executive, who enjoyed a close, personal and professional relationship with Barry and was even part of the group of friends and family who accompanied the late Senator on his last trip down the Colorado River in 1993. We extend our deepest thanks to Peter and all the folks at SRP who made this happen – especially Mike Hummel, General Manager & Chief Executive Officer; David Rousseau, President; John Hoopes, Vice President; and Andrea D. Moreno, Manager – Community Outreach.

Arizona Highways has been showcasing the people, places, and things that make Arizona unique since 1925. From its spectacular landscapes and colorful history, it offers the fascinating culture and endless adventure that Arizona has to offer. The magazine has subscribers in all 50 states and more than 100 countries around the world.

Barry Goldwater was one of the magazine’s first and most important photographers, selling his first photograph to then-editor, Raymond Carlson in 1939.

In all, Arizona Highways has published hundreds of Barry’s photographs over the course of eight decades, perhaps the most notable being an image of a pair of Navajo girls herding sheep in the snow near Rainbow Lodge. That photograph was featured on the cover of the December 1946 issue of Arizona Highways, an issue that became the first nationally circulated consumer magazine to be published in all color, from cover to cover.

Through a shared vision and close collaboration between Arizona Highways Editor, Robert Stieve, and the Foundation’s Founder and Executive Director, Alison Goldwater Ross, Arizona Highways was vital in crafting the official launch of the Barry & Peggy Goldwater Foundation through the creation and release of their award-winning December 2018 Special Collector’s Issue; Photographs by Barry M. Goldwater: The Arizona Highways Collection. This special issue sold-out immediately and acted as a printed prelude to the largest-ever showcase of Goldwater photography to-date, the museum exhibition of Photographs by Barry M. Goldwater: The Arizona Highways Collection, which premiered at Scottsdale’s Museum of the West in Scottsdale, Arizona on January 6, 2019 and will run through April 5th, 2020. Additionally, due to high demand, a book version of the December 2018 issue of the magazine was published and released by Arizona Highways in May of 2019.

All of these efforts resulted in an outpouring of worldwide publicity for the Foundation and its mission. We are forever grateful to Robert Stieve and the entire Arizona Highways family, both past and present, for their appreciation and promotion of Barry Goldwater’s photography and their dedication to preserving and showcasing the incredible photographic legacy of Arizona.
